Perfect Pairing: Best Beers to enjoy with your Favorite Holiday Movies

From the Grinch to Buddy the Elf, we’ve got the ultimate pairing guide for you; guaranteed to match the perfect beer to your holiday movie mood!

Tis the season to be jolly… and also for office holiday parties, spending time with (or carefully avoiding) family members, and pulling your hair out looking for the perfect gift in the midst of Christmas carols and a million other holiday shoppers.
Why not take a break from all the hustle and bustle with your favorite holiday movie and a great beer or two. We’ve got the ultimate pairing guide for you; guaranteed to match the perfect beer to your movie mood!

1. Christmas Story/White Christmas:

These classic films are full of memorable moments, risky schemes, and of course, infamous décor in the form of classic snow-covered trees and major awards.  Pair these classics movies with a tried and true classic (and major award-winning) stout:  Alesmith’s Speedway Stout. It’s full of hype for a reason; it’s the quintessential stout of San Diego and a truly great beer to go back to year after year.

2. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer/Frosty the Snowman/Santa Clause is Coming to Town:

Feeling like you’re misunderstood, and waiting for your redemption or your chance to make a difference… and also maybe you’re made of clay? These classic children’s films wormed their way into our hearts long ago and never really left. If these are the movies that finally make it feel like Christmas season, try New Belgium’s Accumulation. It’s a White IPA that doesn’t taste anything like an IPA. The flavor is so smooth, with a mild hop profile, that doesn’t come off bitter at all. It’s straightforward, but consistent year after year.

3. How the Grinch Stole Christmas/A Charlie Brown Christmas

Sometimes we can get bogged down by the commercialized version of the holidays, not necessarily hating it, but needing to rekindle our spirit in our own way. These movies are just two tales about two guys discovering the spirit of Christmas with their dogs, each in their own iconic way, and marching to their own little drummer.

Black IPAs are much the same; they get misjudged on their appearance, misjudged on their association with IPAs, but through it all, they are consistent, great beers that are finding their own way and staying true to themselves. Try: Culture Brewing’s Black IPA or Green Flash’s Hop Odyssey Black IPA

4. Any Hallmark/Lifetime/ABC Family Holiday movie:

If this season has you feeling a little sappy, a little warm and fuzzy, and you’re always the one rockin’ around the Christmas tree looking for the mistletoe at every party, Bell’s Winter White Ale is the one for you. A light, easy-drinking ale that is just festive enough to remind you that it’s the holiday season, not just everyday rom-com territory.

Bonus beer: For those few and far between movies in this normally predictable genre, that are actually good and worth re-watching, you are going to want something a bit special to match these festive gems. Try Ballast Point’s Peppermint Victory At Sea. While the standard Victory At Sea is amazing, the peppermint variation screams holiday cheer.

5. Elf

You’re all about it!!! Everything Christmas-related is your absolute favorite. It’s honestly THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!! If you sang that in your head, instead of reading it… this one is for you. So, when you’re blissed out on cookies, sugar, candy (including candy canes and candy corn), and syrup, grab Stone’s Mocha IPA. The beer will balance out the sugar rush, and the caffeine will keep you going all season long! It’s no syrup on spaghetti, but we promise, it’s pretty dang tasty.

6.The Holiday/Love Actually

Star-studded casts, British humor, snow, witty one-liners, insanely impressive soundtracks… these two have more in common than you may think at first glance. They remind us that the holidays can also be a time to do the unexpected and mix things up, and that there’s nothing wrong with taking a chance.

Perfect pairing for these films: Council Brewing’s Beatitude, or any of its many variations. This sour is tart, fruity, a little cheeky, and incredibly refreshing; just what we need to keep things in perspective.

7. Home Alone/8 Crazy Nights

We’ve all been there; when you just want to party and enjoy the season, but there seems to be a lingering potential for disaster. Things keep getting in your way, chaos ensues, including your own antics, and every second is another crazy adventure.

If this sounds like you, or something you would enjoy in your life, give Belching Beaver’s Viva La Beaver a try. Rooted in the classic milk stout, Belching Beaver added in a whole lot of flavor and punch to this rendition, making a one-of-a-kind holiday adventure.

8. It’s a Wonderful Life/Miracle on 34th St./A Christmas Carol

These are some of the most renowned, classic, and deeply revered movies that are also culprits for tearing at your heart strings year after year. No nonsense tales, about the true meaning of the holidays that remind us that sometimes, keeping it simple is keeping it perfect. 32 North’s Pennant Pale Ale is the ideal companion. This single-hop ale’s well-balanced flavor makes it easy drinking, consistent, and reliable. Hard to go wrong with that combination.

9. Christmas Vacation

You think you’re ready for the holidays, but you are in so far over your head; the extended family is already making you a little crazy, and that’s before you even finish decorating. So what do you do when family shows up unexpectedly and then gets drunk, poisons your neighborhood sewers, and kidnaps your boss?? We’re going to need something stronger than eggnog for this one:

Modern Times Beer Black House Special Release– Not only is this a great stout on its own, this special release is strong enough to calm you down, and even has a little coffee in there to keep you alert throughout the antics.

If you’re looking for something a bit more like Jack Daniels, à la Clark’s dad, try a barrel-aged stout or porter. They have the same great base, but after spending some time aging in a bourbon barrel, they have a bit more of a boozy bite to them.

10. The Santa Clause/Jingle All the Way

Any parent that can relate to that feeling when you just want to be the hero and make sure your kids have the best holiday ever… but they also are driving you crazy and you’re running on no sleep so you’re a little delusional and possibly need to be committed… or maybe, just commit to the magic! Sometimes the season of giving includes giving yourself a bit of solace to be able to power through. Great Divide’s Hercules Double IPA is the perfect beer for this. A bold, but balanced hop profile will remind you that it’s all worth it, and that if a 10% beer tastes this smooth, maybe magic really can exist!

Whether your holiday season is full of parties, shopping, cookie-making, lights, caroling, or just holly jolly glee, we wish you a wonderful season of joy and happiness!

Remember, if you’re catering your work or family parties this year, why not let us cater your beverages too. We have a wide variety of beers available that can be at your door or office in an hour.
